Charleston Harbor Enjoy a slow and leisurely cruise around the Charleston harbor taking in the historic views from the water. The Charleston Battery is a landmark defensive seawall and promenade in Charleston. Named for a civil-war coastal defense artillery battery at the site, it stretches along the lower shores of the Charleston peninsula, bordered by the Ashley and Cooper Rivers which meet here to form the Charleston harbor.
The Arthur Ravenel Jr Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge over the Cooper River connecting downtown to Mount Pleasant. It opened in 2005 replacing two obsolete cantilever truss bridges. The view of the bridge from the water, especially at night, is spectacular.
Morris Island is an 840-acre uninhabited island in the Charleston Harbor, accessible only by boat. The island lies in the outer reaches of the harbor and was thus a strategic location in the American Civil War. Many people enjoy visiting the island to hunt for sea shells, sharks’ teeth and possibly uncover civil war artifacts. It is also well know for its red and white striped light house that serves as a beautiful backdrop for pictures.
